Music Theory Grades

There are 8 levels: Grades 1 to 8.

The syllabus covers the essential building blocks of music. This starts with the basics of rhythm and notes at Grades 1 to 5, then adds harmony and counterpoint, composition, and a broad knowledge of western music at Grades 6 to 8.

Now, you can take online exam of music theory grades, 1 to 5. Study in all music theory or select the desired grade of music theory to take an online exam, then you will get a qualification on it from ABRSM.

Grade 5 Music Theory is a prerequisite for practical and performance Grades 6 to 8. Candidates must pass Music Theory Grade 5 or above before taking a Practical or Performance Grade 6, 7 or 8. This is to make sure they have a good understanding of the elements of music, something that will prepare them for success at these higher grades.

Performance Grades

There is a digital exam for classical instruments and singing, and there is focusing on performance. Digital exams assessed from a video recording.

The exams are equivalent in demand to the Practical Grades, but have a different emphasis with a focus on performance. For the exam, candidates select and perform four pieces or songs, presented as a continuous program: at least three pieces need to be from the ABRSM existing syllabus (one from each list) and one is of the candidate's own choice.

Performance Grades are assessed digitally: so, choose your pieces/songs, practise your performance, and when you are ready, record a video of your performance and send it to ABRSM for marking by their examiner panel.
